What's HOT and Not!!

We've seen a lot of activity in Off Metals and their increase in prices, especially Nickels struck on Cent planchets. After a fury of bidding by several collectors prices rose to $400 for common dates 1979, 1980, 1981 examples, usually in high grade such as MS 63-65. Now prices seem to have settled back down to the $300 range for the same coins,( Higher for earlier dated examples). That's still a 50% price increase from what they use to sell for a few months ago. Will this new price range hold or will it rise again? Time will tell. Now! Will other Off Metals and Wrong Metals also follow suit and go up in price.. Cents on Dime planchets, Quarter on Nickel planchets, Nickel on Dime planchets, etc. what about the much rarer Double Denominations? Will these also see a 50% increase in price, you would think so! Apparently many error dealers and collectors believe they will as many are buying them as fast as they can at the current older prices.

State Quarter errors remain hot.. especially Missing Clad layers. One national known error dealer has told me he has sold out of everything he had in stock in Missing Clad layer errors. He had nearly 15 in stock and has been selling them for $400-500.

2002 State errors remain almost nonexistent as very few have surfaced in the error market as of this date. State Quarter Off Metals are drawing BIG $$ as they have been for some time now and continue to do so.

Type coin errors, especially those in high grades continue to be RED Hot.. Many exceptional Type coin errors that have not been seen for many decades are now entering the market place, we guess the owners are attracted to the new high buy prices of dealers. We've seen some really great errors surface lately and the situation is buy as soon as its offered! Hesitate a moment and another dealer will buy it out from underneath you..

We recently found a friends error catalog he published in 1976! How about these prices.. Buffalo nickels struck on cents (BU) $400. (todays price $4,500-5,000.), Shield Nickel struck on a 3 cent nickel planchet GEM BU $800. (I didn't know one existed! Estimated today at 20k) Just an example of how much prices have changed.. OH!! Those good o'l days..

With most everything Hot!! What's NOT..

RPM's (Repunched mint marks), RPD's (Repunched dates), many double dies, especially smaller ones, there's still interest of the ones in the Red book. Smaller errors like laminations, rim clips, partial collars, etc. this would be a good area to start a Son, Daughter or Grandchild in the hobby as they're still inexpensive. We all started somewhere and most with the smaller error items, that's the best place to make a mistake when learning as it ends NOT to hurt too much ($$$).

Good hunting, till next month
