What's HOT and What's NOT
|

With this market being so hot! It's like a small child in a "Candy Factory." Everyone is searching for better errors, dealers, collectors and investors. Dealers are getting top prices, Errors at auctions are selling at new record breaking prices and collectors that are selling are asking for top dollar when selling to dealers... All this frenzy in the error numismatic field is still causing higher prices that are not even near the peak! We've spoken to several major error dealers who have told us that they have to on a regular basis change the prices on their error stock every 3 months to try to keep up to this market.
Type coin errors are very hot in almost every grade, but naturally the higher the grade and eye appeal the prices zoooomm up! Type Blank planchets of type coins have been getting a lot of interest (see our ANA report) and unless you're an expert I'd only purchase these certified. I believe NGC is the only major certification company that is certifying blank planchets. Franklin ½ dollar major errors are setting record breaking prices, along with major Sac and SBA dollar errors.
Off metals are still hot, as well as Double denominations when you can find them... Almost all striking errors are being actively sought after by collectors. Then there are 2002 errors, which are rarely seen. Whatever the Mint is doing in preventing new errors from coming into the market is driving up prices on 2002 errors... Example, a 2002 Louisiana State quarter 10% off center sold for over $400. On EBay... A record setting price. But remember that tomorrow a ton a 2002 errors could be released, so paying unusually high prices for 2002 errors is a risky gamble. So if it's NOT an off metal, etc or other major error be careful...
The only part of the market that is temporarily taking a breather is the State quarter error sector. It appears that many collectors are switching to Type error coins and have put aside their quests for State quarter error sets. This may be a GOOD opportunity to do some bargain hunting in this field, as we see only good things happening with this series. How many complete sets of Off Centers on State quarters have you heard of? I've never seen a completed set (up to date). Multiple struck errors are often over looked too. One of the most currently sought after State quarter errors are Missing Clad Layers.
