What's HOT …1/2003

What's HOT for 2003..? Well, we could say everything and we would probably be right..!

With our recent visit to the Mint we feel 2003 error coins will be just like 2002, almost nonexistent.. Look for 2003 State quarter errors and as far as that goes, all State quarter errors will be sought after..

Especially examples struck on Aluminum Feeder fingers, this New Off Metal error was recently discovered by Fred Weinberg, Dave Camire and Myself at our last Mint visit. Prior to our discovery of how they were being made at the Mint, these unusual Off Metal errors were thought by many to be illegally made errors. Now that we know that they are being made at the Mint legally, they're sure to gain in popularity and a huge price surge. These New Aluminum Off Metals come in many denominations and have been seen dated from 1993 to present.

There has been a huge resurgence of interest and price increases in State quarter errors. Off metals, off centers, broadstrikes, clips have all seen large increases.. probably because of the lack of new errors coming out of the Mint.

Some recent prices were:

INDIANA STATE QUARTER 20% CLIP $305.56

2002-P Louisiana Major Struck thru Mint Error $415.00

2002 P INDIANA QUARTER STATE SIDE Miss CLAD $861.00

2002 D TENNESSEE STATE QUARTER STRAIGHT CLIP $202.49

Keep an eye on Mercury dime errors, especially Major off centers in grades AU & above as many collectors feel these are very under priced next to what Buffalo Nickel off centers cost.

Here are two recent sales:

PCGS 15% Off Center Buffalo 1917 MS64 $788.00

1941 Dime ERROR on Netherlands Coin ANACS 60 $2,938.00

Also keep an eye on off centers, double strikes on early dated Wheat cents. They have been long over looked and being purchased by many wise collectors. Look at this recent sale:

PCGS D/S, O/C 1916 AU55 CENT $1,025.00

Another long forgotten error we feel has GREAT potential is the "Unplated" (100%) Cent. Much like its enormously popular cousin, the Missing Clad layer State quarter, these Unplated (100%) cents have been long over looked.. Be careful though..! these errors can be easily be counterfeited by plating and heat processes. If you're not familiar with these processes and tell tale signs buy ONLY certified examples by PCGS & NGC. These are the ONLY 2 certified companies I trust, the others have all been fooled previously.

Have a wonderful New Year and Good Hunting (errors)

Rich
