We've decided that each month we will take a particular Error coin series and analyze it. This way you may get a better feel what to look for in a particular error series and this may help you as to, what to purchase and NOT! This Month: Indian Cents A very popular series among both Error collectors and straight coin collectors. That's a very good clue, since it is a very popular series you can expect this series to be actively sought after by all. There are several good books on this series explaining varieties and double dies (see our links for a book supplier). Also a very active Indian cent club named the Fly-in Club (Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Collectors Society) Varieties such as Overdates, double dies, and others are actively sought and bring high prices. These varieties can still be Cherry-picked at coin shows, stores, and from the abundance of raw Indian cents still available to search through. We love major Off Centers (15% & up), especially in Xf and higher grades, though lower grades still bring good prices and have an active market. Stay away from low grade nodates, porous planchets, prices can cost for Off Centers from $150 for the lowest grade to $900. & UP for Uncs

and these have a lot of growth potential. Double strikes can be a problem as many known counterfeits are out there. Make sure that both strikes have the same die characteristics, collar marks, and wear. If your not sure, buy only certified examples (we recommend NGC & PCGS). Here in this double strike category, I like to stay in the VF and higher grades. As I feel these have the most growth potential and more sought after because of their eye appeal. Prices can run $500-$1,500. currently and you can expect these prices to double in the future. Indents and Brockages (large) are pretty tough to locate and can be costly depending on the grades. $100-$1,500. Good Growth potential. Off Metals are extremely rare especially on US planchets and draw big premiums. Same for Caps, multi-strikes, and other major errors. Stay away from laminations, small clips, strike through, and other small errors, UNLESS there just for your collection! These will offer poor growth potentials. Once again look for the highest grade you can afford, with the highest Eye-Appeal you can find.
